I'm so pleased with myself because I've been able to figure out the CD writer. I've backed up my webpage, my under-construction pages, my midi collection, and the other dis n dat stuff. I still need to back up some of the less than obvious stuff -- like all my settings, pallettes, and brushes in Paint Shop Pro.
The CD writer instructions weren't much help, but the help screens were. The only problem is that you had to have an error, then highlight the error before the help screen would pop up. The troubleshooting tips were not helpful. Intuitively I figured out that the problem was an out-of-memory error which confounded me since I have 320 MB of RAM and 4 Gigs of empty harddrive space. No where in the instructions did it tell me to increase the TEMP folder settings. In fact, I had to hunt down the screen where this is changed. It's not a setting that I've ever fooled with since I've owned my computer.
I'm also pleased with myself because I figured out FTP on this computer (mine is still not working). I managed to upload the fall greeting card you see on the What's New? page. I suppose this post doesn't really qualify as a peril, does it? But I can't be in a tizzy all the time, now, can I?

I'm backing up my files on CD now. I figured out the problem. The WINDOWS/TEMP file was too small. After I increased it, I've been able to fill up the CD's instead of getting less than 100MB on each one.

My modem quit.

I feel terrible today. I woke up sneezing my head off. I wonder what's going on?
I'm reduced to backing up my work on 3 1/2 inch floppies. I can't get the CD writer to work (reliably), and Sam's doesn't have any zip disks. I manage to put one page and it's graphics on each disk. At this rate, it'll be next winter before I'm ready to put my computer in the shop.

Same-o. Same-o. The computer keeps blipping off and I keep not wanting to take it in and have them ...uh... well, I need my computer. Now I can't get the CD writer to work so I can back up my files!

Yesterday the computer shut down again. I called to see how busy the shop was. She could get to it if I brought it in Thursday at 10 a.m. Unfortunately Keith left for work today before he had time to haul the computer down the stairs for me.
Okay, to be perfectly honest, I wasn't quite ready to take it in. I am backing up some more files on CD. Besides, tomorrow is Friday. I don't want to be without the computer the whole weekend. gasp
After I had filled one CD, I was sorting files for the next one and deleting invalid file names that the CD writer program won't accept. All of a sudden the screen started flipping like it was having seizure. I couldn't close the window and I couldn't get another window to open. I'm not sure what I did exactly, but after it stopped seizing, I did a warm reboot.
Then the keyboard input wasn't working. I tried another reboot. Still no keyboard. The mouse was working so I kept trying to sort the files, but there was no renaming or searching. I had a sick feeling in my stomach. "I'm going to have to take it in now," I thought.
I didn't see what difference it would make, but I decided to do a complete shut down. When I rebooted, everything was back to normal.... so far, anyway.

I promised myself that today I'd take my computer in to have it fixed. The day is almost half over and I haven't done it yet.

Again I was quickly previewing a large file of images and the computer shut down.
