Several reasons prompted me to create this group.
From my website, a lot of people have asked me, "How do you cope with the darkness?" I'm happy that my site has become a popular resource about Alaska, but I'm finding that I'm not able to respond personally to every question. The Alaska-Living group has been quite successful as a resource for other Alaskans to share their knowledge, too.
In the Alaska-Living group, the topic of Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) was brought up. After our discussion of SAD, I considered starting a group about coping in Alaska, a place to receive support and encouragement, as well as answer questions for people who are planning to move here.
Additionally, I'm aware of how high the suicide rate is in Alaska. I truly believe that suicide is an escape from pain not a wish for death. When a person has somewhere to turn, a place to share their disturbing thoughts, and a kind person to listen, I believe the pain can be endured or released in a positive way.
This group is formed to discuss these topics and others related to coping with life in Alaska. No matter where you live, we'd benefit from hearing how you cope with trials, problems, depression, and suffering of all types.
I considered calling this group, "Alaska Coping", but I've decided to name it "Northern Composure" so that we can include the Pacific Northwest or any other area of the world that has dark winters or rainy, gloomy summers.
This is a private group. The messages will be visible only to members. However, anyone can join. I will moderate it because I want the group to be a safe and positive place for people to share.
If you or a loved one is suffering from depression, I encourage you to consult a mental health care professional. If you are considering suicide, immediately call 911 or go to your hospital's emergency room.
If you have any questions, contact me, or consult the FAQ.
I look forward to you joining our group discussion, to reading your messages, and hearing your questions. I hope you'll share a few things about yourself so we can get to know you. I will add my location and a website address to my signature line so that you can remember who I am and where I live.
Kind regards,
Pamela
