What's a stuffed puffin?

and other questions asked me while I sit at my computer.

What is the population of Alaska?

According to the 2000 Census, Alaska has 626,932 people.  The population is, on the average, younger than the rest of the U.S.

Fairbanks, where I live, has 82,840 people in the Fairbanks North Star Borough, and 30,224 people inside the city limits.

What should I wear in Alaska?

Summers are comparable to spring or fall in the mid-United States.  August can be rainy with highs in the 50s and lows in the high 30s.  By October we have snow and by December we can have 40 below zero.  March begins the snow melt period with daytime temperatures above freezing.  April and May are very pleasant months, dry but still cool enough to need a jacket outdoors.

What you wear depends on what kind of weather you are accustomed.  If you are from Texas, you will need warmer clothing than if you are from Minnesota.  Fairbanks has very warm summers reaching into the 90s at times.  So bring along your shorts and tank tops.  However, when it's rainy, you'll need jeans and sweatshirts, and a rain poncho would come in handy.

Southeast Alaska, Juneau, Ketchikan,Valdez have a lot of rain and wind.  You must have rain gear if you plan to visit these places or take a cruise up the inside passage.
