What's a stuffed puffin?

and other questions asked me while I sit at my computer.

What should I pack for my trip to Alaska?

Essentials:  Absolutely do not forget your mosquito spray or lotion. We call it mosquito 'dope'.  I like the brand that has sunscreen and mosquito repellant in the same lotion. It doesn`t matter which brand you choose. The key ingredient is 'deet'.  The more deet the product contains, the more effective is the repelling properties.  No, A popular skin lotion does not work for Alaska mosquitoes (I don`t know about your mosquitos where you come from, but Alaska ones are SMART!).

Clothing / Shoes / Weather Gear:  If you live in a climate that has hot summers, then bring warm clothes. If you are used to cool evenings, then you bring what you normally wear in the summer.

    Don't forget:
  • At least one sweater or sweat shirt.
  • Rubber boots for wading across streams (especially for children).
  • A windbreaker
  • A rain poncho, the kind that folds up into a small pouch is usually sufficient.
  • Comfortable clothes, jeans, T-shirts.
  • Comfortable shoes, I recommend athletic shoes suitable for walking.
  • Shorts and tank tops (if you are coming to Fairbanks, it gets HOT here.)
  • Swimming suit (you`ll be surprised how many opportunities you`ll have to use it!)

Toiletries and Medical Supplies:

  • Bring plenty of medication although refills are available in Fairbanks and Anchorage and other cities of any size.  However, it may be a long way between those places.
  • I always bring a copy of my eyeglass prescription `just in case`. There are a lot of opticians in the major cities.
  • Mosquito Repellant, DON`T FORGET THIS, although you can buy it in Alaska, why waste your time inside a store. The beauty is OUTSIDE!.
  • Sunscreen, yes, I wear it even in winter. Alaska is closer to the sun than a lot of places.

Photo Equipment: I bring two cameras with me:

  • Nikon F (manual focus)
  • Olympus pocket camera (auto-focus)

My parents brought two video cameras.  We have a really good photographic memory book.
