Rainy Month Ends Hot Streak "The mean September temperature in Fairbanks was 5.8 degrees F below normal at 38.7 degrees F, which marked the end of a 5-month streak of above normal monthly temperatures. The highest and lowest temperatures recorded were 61 degrees F on the 8th and 17 degrees F on the 29th. Ten days of measurable precipitation left a total of 1.34 inches, 20% above normal for September. The first snow of the season was recorded on the 26th with 0.2 inch and 1.6 more inches fell before month’s end. However, there was no snow cover left on the ground." Temperature Extremes "Fairbanks residents experienced below normal temperatures for much of September, however temperatures soared during the last few days of the month with a high of 71 degrees F on the 30th, which broke the previous record of 65 degrees. The low for that day was 45 degrees F, which is the normal high for that date. The average for the month was 41.8 degrees F, which was 2.7 degrees cooler than normal. The high for the month was 71 degrees F on the 30th, while the low occurred on the 15th and 23rd when the temperature dipped to 24 degrees. Liquid water equivalent precipitation totaled 1.27 inches, or 13% above normal and the first snow of the season fell on the 25th. However, this did not stick around long with the warm up that followed." Quoted from the Alaska Climate Research Center.
