Record-setting Warm Weather

Fairbanks experienced a warmer than normal February and two record high temperatures during the month thanks to a Chinook event bringing warm and windy conditions to much of the Interior.  The average temperature of 1.2 F was almost 5 F above normal, which breaks the two-month streak of below normal average temperatures.  The highest temperature occurred on the 11th and also set a record for that day of 46 F, with a 44 F reading on the previous day setting a record as well.  The low for the month was 27 F on the 7th. Precipitation totaled 0.33 inches of liquid water equivalence, 89% of normal, and snowfall was 7.8 inches.  By the end of the month, 19 inches of snow was on the ground.

Sunny and Warm

This past month has been mild compared to winters 30 years ago.  I can remember having 50 below the whole month (or so it seemed).  At night the temperature gets down to 30 below some nights, but in the daytime, it warms up above zero.  It is sunny and very pleasant.

Whoops!

Yesterday I went to the doctor.  I noticed as I drove by the downtown clock that the temperature was a balmy -2 degrees (-18 C.).  The street didn't seem particularly slippery to drive on, but when I got out of the car, whoops! my feet flew out from under me.  I landed in a pile of snow, and all the contents of my purse scattered about.

I decided to get my cane out of the back seat to help me walk.  (I really need to get some spikes for the end of it like I have on my crutches.)  Anyway when I got to the curb, whoops!  I fell forward.  I hadn't picked up the stuff from my purse yet.  Just as well, eh?  LOL  I wasn't hurt, just very snowy from falling into the pile that had been scraped off the sidewalk onto the street.  A lady from across the street dashed over to help me.

"Where are your boots?" she asked. "Do you have them in the car?"

Sheepishly, I had to answer, "No, they are at home." I had worn regular shoes because it was so "warm".  I hadn't counted on the shoes slipping on the icy, packed snow.  With my pride barely intact, I crawled on my knees over the snow berm until I got to a smooth spot on the sidewalk.  The lady insisted that I get a stable grip with the cane before I stood up.  I was still brushing snow out of my purse and off my skirt as I walked through the hallway and up the elevator of the building.

When I got home and safely in my chair, I hear this whoosh sound from outside the livingroom window.  The pile of snow that had accumulated on the deck rail had fallen off.  I'm surely glad I wasn't standing outside when it fell.

I have another doctor's appointment today.  I wonder where my boots are?  LOL
