Permanent Fund Dividend Amount

The amount for the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend was announced today: The total dividend amount of $510,061,878.29 is divided by the 603,080 eligible applicants which results in the amount of $845.76. Direct deposit will be October 12, 2005. Checks will be mailed beginning October 26, 2005.

Treadmill for an Elephant

According to the Juneau Empire, the Alaska Zoo has purchased a treadmill for Maggie, the elephant.

Now, I know I need to lose weight, but I always picture elephants as looking their best with a little meat on their bones. Apparently Maggie needs the exercise. Now how do you get an 9,120 pound elephant to step on a treadmill? Apparently the Alaska Zoo believes it can be done. First they put her on a special eating regimen, and she lost approximately 900 pounds. I'll keep you posted.

Potato Extravaganza

While updating the events on pamelajoy.com this month, I came across an extravaganza that I don't remember seeing before. It is totally my oversight because this is the sixth year for the Tanana Valley Potato Extravanza. Six-course meals will be prepared by the Midnight Sun Chefs Association. The main ingredient for these courses? Why, potatoes, of course!
