Newbies
The Internet is an awesome entity. When you are new to the Net, you can easily become lost and confused. Before you post, please read at least the first article and the guidelines for posting later on in this FAQ. These educational links about the Internet will help you understand and fit in.
- Core Rules of Netiquette Netiquette is the Internet's version of etiquette. If you don't want to look like a newbie, embarrass, or humiliate yourself, then read and follow these rules.
- Usenet Help Before there was Yahoo Groups, there was Usenet. Many of the conventions of Usenet apply when posting anywhere on the Net. So, read the section Where and How should I post
- If you still haven't had enough rules, then read Netiquette Guidelines. This is an RFC (Request for Comment) written in 1995. Reading it will give you a little flavor of the beginnings of the Net.
- Why You Shouldn't Ask for E-mail Responses Even though this article was written about Usenet, the principles apply to e-mail lists as well.
- The UnOfficial Smiley FAQ A smiley is a way of adding personality and emotion to your writing, also called emoticons.
- Smiley Dictionary
- Webopedia An online dictionary for Internet and computer terms.

Posting Guidelines
Only members may post messages to the Alaska-Living group. Send your messages to Alaska-Living@yahoogroups.com.
Crossposting is not allowed on this group. Crossposting is sending the same message to several different e-mail lists. When you reply, make sure your message is only going to one group.
Please, original posts only. Do not forward messages from other people or groups. We'd like to hear your personal experiences and opinions, not those of someone who does not belong to the Alaska Living group.
When you reply to a message, please remove the old Yahoo footers and the parts of the previous message that are irrelevant to your reply. It is considered good Netiquette to edit your posts:
When quoting another person, edit out whatever isn't directly applicable to your reply. Don't let your mailing or Usenet software automatically quote the entire body of messages you are replying to when it's not necessary. Take the time to edit any quotations down to the minimum necessary to provide context for your reply. Nobody likes reading a long message in quotes for the third or fourth time, only to be followed by a one line response: "Yeah, me too."
- quoted from http://www.fau.edu/netiquette/net/dis.html
Copyrighted media should not be posted to this group. Fair-use quotations are allowed but not copyrighted articles or essays.
This list is set to remove attachments before forwarding the messages to the group.
Please do not send off-topic messages to the group address. When you want to write about other topics than Alaska, please continue your discussion in e-mail.
When you ask a question, please be specific. If you want to know everything about living in Alaska, then you can read the over 8000 messages already archived. If you want to know the date of the next Iditarod, please ask. Somebody will help you out.
Along with your questions, tell us where you are coming from and what area of Alaska you are interested in. Add your locality to your signature line to help us get to know you.
If your question is not answered the first time, rephrase it and ask again. Vague questions are hard to answer.
Remember, if someone answers your question, there is no guarantee that it is the right answer for you.
When you answer a question, share you own personal experiences. These posts are the most interesting to read, and the most likely to contain accurate information.
Please be kind to the newbies. Remember, you were new once, too.
Advertising and Selling
Alaska Living supports Alaskan artists and craftsman. A contributing member of the group may post an announcement and link to a new work.
A contributing member of the Alaska Living group may post a brief announcement selling goods or services. Please conduct any transactions off list via telephone or e-mail.
Any other advertising is not allowed on the Alaska Living group.
Political advertising or announcements are not allowed.
Posting Links
Posting Alaska links is always okay. Well, maybe I should qualify that. Posting G-rated Alaska links in your e-mail messages is always okay. :) Posting links to your personal website in your signature is okay. Posting links to your business website in your signature is okay. Signature links do not have to be about Alaska.
In fact, when you find a helpful Alaska link, please post it to the links section of the Alaska Living group. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Alaska-Living/links
I've made some folders for various areas of the state. If the link is about a locality, then use the folders. Otherwise, just post it to the main section. If we get a bunch of links on one thing, I can always move them to a new folder.
If you have an Alaska photo album online, please post a link to it in the photo album folder.
If you see any links that should not be in our group links page, let me know and I will delete them.
